In the past several months we have been sharing personal stories from singers about how they found their way to Cantala. Cantala singers come from many walks of life, but together we form a welcoming, creative, and connected community. These stories reflect the diverse paths that brought us here—and the shared passion that keeps us singing.

Here is the last installment in the blog series “Finding Cantala”. Enjoy.

Finding Cantala: A Musical Home

My love for choral music began early—I sang in school choirs and local ensembles throughout my youth. But as my musical tastes and values evolved, I found myself searching for a group that truly resonated with me. That search ended when I discovered Cantala and their 2024–2025 season lineup, which promised a repertoire rich in Canadian composers and innovative programming.

My first experience with Cantala was when I attended their December 2024 concert, The Lost Words: A Spell Book, held at Forest Hill United Church. The program featured selections inspired by Robert Macfarlane's book The Lost Words, a beautiful project aimed at reviving words related to nature that have fallen out of common usage. Hearing the choir’s clear, emotional performance, accompanied by pianist Asal Iranmehr, moved me deeply. It was evident that Cantala is committed to meaningful and evocative music that speaks to both heart and mind.

What drew me beyond the performances was Cantala’s ethos. Their dedication to commissioning new works, supporting Canadian composers, and fostering an inclusive, supportive community really spoke to my own values. I admired their commitment to both musical excellence and meaningful engagement.

Inspired, I auditioned for Cantala and was warmly welcomed into the choir. Rehearsals have been a beautiful blend of challenging work and camaraderie, where I’ve been able to grow my skills and form lasting friendships. There’s something special about singing in a group where every voice contributes to a shared expression of artistry and emotion.

Looking back, joining Cantala has been a pivotal moment for me, both musically and personally. It’s more than just finding a choir—it’s about discovering a community that truly resonates with my passion and aspirations. Through Cantala, I’ve found a space where music becomes a shared language, a way to connect, and a source of profound joy.

If you’re searching for a musical home that celebrates artistry, community, and the richness of Canadian music, I encourage you to experience Cantala for yourself. For me, it all started with a single concert—and it changed everything.
