Finding My Voice Again: A Newcomer’s Journey to Singing in Toronto
Moving from Vancouver to Toronto was both thrilling and daunting. The bustling city, vibrant culture, and endless opportunities were exciting, but leaving behind my tight-knit choir community in Vancouver left a quiet space in my heart. Singing wasn’t just a hobby for me — it was a source of joy, connection, and belonging. As a young woman passionate about choral music, I was eager to find a similar community in Toronto where I could lift my voice alongside others.
Back in Vancouver, singing in choirs had been a central part of my life. From community choirs to youth ensembles, I’d spent years learning new music, harmonizing with diverse voices, and performing in beautiful venues. Those experiences shaped me not just as a singer but as a person. The friendships I made, the sense of purpose during rehearsals, and the collective energy during concerts created memories I treasure.
Arriving in Toronto, I quickly realized the city’s choral scene is just as rich and diverse, though it can feel overwhelming at first. The sheer number of choirs, ranging from large symphonic groups to smaller community and a cappella ensembles, meant there was something for everyone. However, navigating where to start was a bit challenging.
After exploring various options and attending a few open rehearsals, I found myself drawn to the Cantala Choir. What stood out to me about Cantala was its reputation for musical excellence combined with a warm, inclusive community atmosphere. The choir’s commitment to performing a wide range of repertoire—from classical masterpieces to contemporary works—resonated with my own musical interests and background. Moreover, Cantala’s welcoming environment made it easy to connect with fellow singers and feel like part of a family, despite being new to the city. Joining Cantala felt like the perfect way to continue my singing journey while forging meaningful connections in Toronto.
