Cantala Choir Winter Concert 2025

Our program is a thoughtfully curated tapestry of pieces that will transport audiences through the textures and emotions of the season. We’re thrilled to feature works that span from sacred classics to contemporary Canadian compositions, alongside dynamic performances that include dancers and unique arrangements.

The evening opens with Carol Trilogy by Laura Hawley — a beautiful set of traditional carols that instantly evoke the joy and warmth of the holidays. Following this is Wyandot’s Realm by Andrew Balfour, his powerful reimagined arrangement of the Huron Carol, which honors Indigenous heritage and storytelling through music—a highlight that speaks to Cantala’s commitment to celebrating diverse Canadian voices.

We also welcome the evocative compositions of Canadian composer Katherine Petkovski with Kyrie, a soulful exploration of prayer and yearning.

The program continues with Tabula Rasa by Don MacDonald, whose work challenges and delights with complex rhythms and harmonies. Anne-Marie Murphy’s Christus Natus Est ushers in the traditional Christmas spirit with vibrant energy.

In addition to these featured works, the concert presents Adam Lay I Bounden by Don MacDonald, and a set of small ensembles of Seasonal Music, showcasing intimate vocal harmonies and the joyful spirit of the season. These ensembles create moments of close-knit musical storytelling that contrast beautifully with the larger choir pieces.

Throughout the concert, Asal Iranmehr will accompany Cantala on piano, adding depth and nuance to the performances with her sensitive and expressive playing.

This concert is not just a performance; it’s an invitation to connect with the season’s spirit through music that uplifts, inspires, and celebrates the richness of cultural diversity. Whether you’re a longtime Cantala supporter or new to our community, this concert offers something special for every listener.
